Learn to Unlearn to Lead

Many early-career managers fall into the trap of being the sole problem solver. While it's natural to want to demonstrate your capabilities, it's essential to resist the urge to always provide the answers.

By stepping back and empowering your team to contribute to solutions, you foster a culture of innovation and growth. Your role shifts from being the expert to a mentor and facilitator. Remember, your team members possess valuable insights and perspectives that can lead to unexpected and creative solutions.

Embrace the opportunity to learn from your team and watch your leadership style evolve.

Let your team members be part of the solution. Especially when you are in your first five years of a manager career, you want to deliver the solution because you know you still have the drive to have a huge career and then you push forward and come up with all the solutions yourself. One of the things I have learned from my mentor is stepping back.

Even if you have the perfect solution that will solve everything, step back and ask questions. Enable your team members to come up with a solution and that will help them to contribute to the wider good. And because you enable them to grow as part of their contribution as better it is for the organization and in return for you too.

You don't need to deliver the solution as a manager. It's a rethinking process and something I needed to learn quite a while ago. And I still use that today when I teach others how to get into the first couple of years of leadership.
