Bad Managers Taught Me How Not to Be

Bad managers often get a bad reputation—but have you considered the lessons they can teach you? We flip the narrative in this episode of The Daily Hint with Jens Heitland. Instead of focusing on frustration, we explore how negative management experiences can shape you into a better leader.

As professionals, we tend to focus on what our managers do wrong. But every misstep they take is a golden opportunity to learn. You can consciously shape your leadership style by reflecting on what didn’t work. Jens shares his personal strategy: he keeps a list of traits and behaviors from past bad managers and reviews it regularly. This simple yet profound habit ensures he doesn’t unconsciously replicate those mistakes.

The key takeaway? Awareness is your superpower. By being intentional about what you don’t want to do, you create a clearer path toward the leader you aspire to become.

Take a moment to think about your own experiences. What management behaviors do you want to avoid? Use those lessons to guide your leadership journey.

Listen now to discover actionable tips for transforming negative experiences into a leadership advantage.

Bad managers teach you how not to be. We are often complaining as individuals about our managers and the people that are managing us. But the good thing is for ourselves, think about it. We are learning from how not to do things. I have a list of bad managers that I've experienced for myself. And this is my list that I'm going through every half a year to look at and say, this is how I'm not going to be.

And. Just bringing that back for myself into my consciousness regularly will enable me to not be like that person and this is so simple that a lot of people don't, but think about it. You can do that too. What are the bad managing experiences that you have had in the past and that you try not to do?

Just be conscious about what you don't want and it helps you to get out to where you want to be.
