216 - Explain the Why Behind Tasks
Explaining the "why" behind tasks is crucial for leadership success. In this episode of The Daily Hint, learn how providing context and purpose can enhance team engagement and performance.
Explain the Why Behind Tasks
In leadership, one of the most common pitfalls is delegating tasks without explaining the reasoning behind them. Often, managers assign responsibilities expecting their teams to follow through without fully understanding the purpose. This approach, while efficient in the short term, can lead to disengagement and lackluster results over time.
In this episode of The Daily Hint, we explore the importance of explaining the "why" behind tasks. Providing context is not just about ensuring that tasks are completed; it's about fostering a deeper connection between team members and their work. When people understand the purpose of what they're doing, they are more likely to be motivated, engaged, and aligned with the broader goals of the organization.
Explaining the "why" also opens the door for feedback and dialogue. It encourages team members to think critically about their work and potentially offer insights that could improve processes or outcomes. In essence, it transforms a simple task into an opportunity for learning and growth.
As a leader, it's important to remember that your team needs to see the bigger picture. By explaining the rationale behind tasks, you're not just giving instructions; you're building a foundation of trust and mutual respect. This small change in how you delegate can lead to significant improvements in team dynamics and overall performance.
Listen to this episode of The Daily Hint to discover practical tips on how to integrate this approach into your leadership style, and start seeing the positive impact on your team's morale and productivity.

One of the biggest problems we have as managers is sometimes forgetting to give people the possibility to understand why they're doing the things they're supposed to do. We are just delegating the task and we're expecting people to do this and maybe we give them a little bit of perspective of the future but we don't give them why we want them to do it, why this task needs to be done at all.
Explaining the why and giving them the possibility to understand exactly why is it that this person is doing it, gives them the possibility to understand, oh yeah, maybe that's good. But if we don't explain the why, nobody will know.
