Elevate Others to Reach Greater Heights than Your Own

In today’s episode of The Daily Hint with Jens Heitland, we dive into a transformative leadership principle: the power of developing others to surpass your own achievements. It might seem unusual to encourage your team members to rise above you, especially in large organizations, but doing so can unlock career opportunities you never imagined.

By fostering the growth of your team and promoting their success, you create a network of leaders who will not only be grateful for your guidance but may also influence your future. Whether they advance within your current company or move on to other opportunities, their recognition of your leadership can lead to invitations for new roles or collaborations. This approach not only solidifies your reputation as a leader but also ensures that you’ll never run out of opportunities.

The key takeaway? Great leaders build a legacy by developing others to reach heights even if they may not achieve them. When you enable others to succeed, you position yourself for long-term success—both within your organization and beyond.

Tune in to this episode to learn how elevating others can take your career to the next level.

Transcript:

If you develop people above yourself, that might be super weird if you work in a large organization, but it's an enabler for your career. Let me show you how this works. So you focus on the development of your team members as their manager, as their leader, and you promote them over your head and you enable them to develop so fast and so well that they're ending up in higher positions than they will be forever thankful that you helped them.

It doesn't mean that they will take you and put you into higher positions, but that enables them to see who you are and place you in important positions inside of the company, if they're above you. Or if they might move outside of the company, they might ask you to join them. It's an enabler. Good leaders are developing others.

And if you want to be a good leader, develop others so that they're more successful than you ever will be. And you will never run out of job opportunities in your future.
