Why You Should Not Wait Until You Are Offered a Promotion

In this episode of The Daily Hint with Jens Heitland, we explore a crucial mindset shift for career development: stop waiting for a promotion to come to you. In many organizations, especially larger ones, promotions can be slow and tied to headcounts and budgets. But if you want to accelerate your growth, you can’t sit back and wait for someone else to notice your efforts.

The key takeaway from this episode is simple: take charge of your own career. Rather than waiting for your manager or senior leadership to offer a promotion, take proactive steps to make your ambitions known. Build relationships with key decision-makers beyond your immediate circle, and showcase your results consistently. Visibility and results are the foundation of advancement.

Another important point: sometimes growth may require looking beyond your current organization. If you’re delivering value but not receiving recognition, it may be time to consider other opportunities. Remember, your career is in your hands, and waiting for others to decide your fate only limits your potential.

Listen to this episode to gain practical insights on how to position yourself for the next step in your career and why you should always be the one driving your professional growth.

Don't wait until you're promoted. Do the first step, ask for the promotion. And that sounds weird because a lot of people are waiting for the manager or the manager of the manager, specifically in large organizations. It's everything is slow and everything is fast. Focused on head counts, money, and the possibility of budgets.

If you want to grow, you need to go beyond your manager and the manager of your manager. You need to look at the total ecosystem of the company. And sometimes that means you need to go outside of your company to grow. Don't let others be the decision-makers of your career. Don't leave the luck to the other people.

Don't leave the power to the other people. You need to influence your own luck. And that means you need to take action. That means you need to connect to people and deliver results. And if you are visible and deliver results, you sooner or later will be promoted. If not, change the company. Everyone can do that.
