This is Why I Went Back to Paper and Pen to Get Things Done

In a world dominated by digital productivity tools, taking a step back to analog methods might seem counterintuitive. Yet, this episode of The Daily Hint with Jens Heitland uncovers the surprising power of a simple paper-and-pen approach for getting things done.

Digital tools can offer convenience, but for many, they also mean constant pings, pop-ups, and distractions. Using paper and pen helps create a clear separation from digital devices, refocusing the mind and freeing it from the pressure of online multitasking. For me, paper allows a kind of “pause” that encourages intentional planning rather than reactive action.

In this episode, I discuss how prioritizing tasks on paper lets me evaluate what’s genuinely important. I share my experience with the bullet journal method, which organizes tasks by month and day. Each day, I identify and cross out specific actions, giving a sense of completion and momentum. This simple practice has been transformative for productivity and is worth considering if you’re seeking a way to regain focus and work on what truly matters.

This episode explores why stepping back from digital distractions can be a powerful, surprisingly effective move—one that might just help you achieve more with less noise.

Transcript:

This is why I went back to paper and pen getting things done. One of the things I found out for myself that my mind goes always into action mode when I use digital devices because it's about the work when I'm using them. And when I go back to paper and pen, I can concentrate.

I write down what are the different things. things I'm doing and how do I select what is most important prioritizing. And one of the things I'm using is the bullet journal, just a methodology that helps me to stay on track of what I'm doing. It focuses on the month and it focuses on the day. And I have really specific tasks that I'm crossing out every day.

So I know things are going to happen. This is a game-changer that you can try too.
