This is How I Stay Connected to People in My Network

In today’s fast-paced world, relationships can slip away if they’re not maintained. In this episode of The Daily Hint, I discuss a straightforward approach to keep your connections alive and meaningful. Staying top of mind in your network is crucial, not just when looking for opportunities, but as an ongoing habit that creates genuine, valuable connections.

I share my personal system: using a task manager to schedule regular check-ins with key contacts every 12, 18, or 24 weeks. This helps me stay organized and intentional with my follow-ups. Rather than reaching out sporadically, I aim for a steady rhythm of communication. Whether it’s sharing a relevant article or simply checking in, these interactions strengthen my professional relationships over time.

Building this consistent habit means that if I ever have a question or need support, I can comfortably reach out—knowing my connection is current, not distant. Networking shouldn’t be daunting; with the right tools and strategies, you can stay memorable and make lasting connections.

If you don't stay top of mind of the connections you have, how would someone think of you when they have a job opening? So here is how I do that. I have a task manager that I use for the connections I want to stay in contact with. And I use that. And put the name in and say, I want to connect to this person every 12 weeks, every 18 weeks, every whatever weeks.

And it pops up. And then I look at that task manager and say, yeah, I was in contact with that person. Everything fine, nothing to do. And if not, I'm writing a message saying, Hey, how are you doing? What's going on? You haven't talked for a while. This is a nice article. Have you heard about this? And we connect.

And that's how I'm staying top of mind with a lot of people. Over time, your network is compounding. Because if you have truly a need, if you have a question, if you have an ask, you can reach out to them and just ask. Because you're not just randomly asking them something after five years of silence.

You're connected with them every 12 weeks.
