Measure to Progress in Your Career

In today’s fast-paced world, progressing in your career often feels like an uphill battle. Yet, one common factor among those who struggle is the lack of measurement in their professional journey. This episode of The Daily Hint unpacks why measuring your actions and outcomes is critical to achieving meaningful progress in your career.

Let’s consider a straightforward example: If you send 100 job applications, receive 5 interview invitations, and secure 1 job offer, what do these numbers tell you? More importantly, how can you use this information to improve? By analyzing each stage of the process—applications, interviews, and offers—you can identify areas of strength and opportunities for improvement.

However, measurement alone isn’t enough. It’s crucial to start with a clear understanding of what you want to achieve. Without this clarity, you may find yourself accepting a job that doesn’t align with your goals or values, even if it seems like a step forward. This episode emphasizes the importance of starting with the end in mind and methodically measuring every step towards that goal.

Ultimately, the key takeaway is that progress in your career isn’t just about putting in more effort; it’s about being strategic with your actions, measuring your progress, and adjusting your approach accordingly. Doing so ensures that every step you take is a step towards the career you truly desire.

Tune in to this episode to learn more about how you can start measuring your way to success.

Transcript:

The problem I see with people I coach who do not progress in their career is that they don't measure. Let me give you an example.

You send 100 applications to 100 companies. Out of these 100 applications, you get 5 invitations to job interviews. And out of these 5 job interviews, you get 1 job offer.

And if you know these numbers, you can improve

every

single

one of them.

But that all doesn't matter if you get a job offer from a company that doesn't fit what you want. So you need to make sure

*in the beginning *

what you want to get. And if you don't plan that into all the separate steps and measure them,

You will end up still with a job offer that you don't like.

Start with the end in mind, and then measure every single step to get there.
