How I Delegate As A Leader

In today’s episode of The Daily Hint with Jens Heitland, we explore a crucial aspect of leadership: delegation. Many managers struggle with delegation because they approach it from a purely managerial perspective, focusing on tasks rather than on the people responsible for them. However, true leaders understand that effective delegation is not about managing every detail but about empowering their team members to take ownership of their work.

The episode emphasizes that the first step in successful delegation is selecting the right person for the task. This isn’t just about matching skills to responsibilities; it’s about choosing someone who will find the task challenging enough to foster personal and professional growth. By framing the task as a development opportunity, you set the stage for them to take full ownership.

Once the right person is selected, the leader’s role shifts to one of guidance and support rather than direct oversight. Instead of dictating every step, you encourage the individual to develop their own plan to achieve the desired outcome. This approach not only builds their confidence but also ensures that they are fully engaged with the task, as they have had a hand in shaping its execution.

A key takeaway from this episode is the importance of allowing your team members to make decisions and, yes, even mistakes. Empowerment means stepping back and letting them run with the task, providing feedback only when necessary. This approach contrasts sharply with micromanagement, where a manager controls every detail, often stifling creativity and innovation.

By empowering your team, you cultivate a sense of ownership and accountability that leads to better results. When team members feel trusted and challenged, they are more likely to invest in their work and contribute to the overall success of the organization.

Tune in to this episode of The Daily Hint to learn how to transform your approach to delegation and discover the game-changing benefits of leading through empowerment.

Transcript:

Most managers struggle with delegation because they are not empowering. If you empower, you switch from manager to leader.

And this is how it works.

You select the person in the way that you take the person that is fit for that task and get a little bit challenged through that task so that they personally grow into that task.

And then you tell the person that you would like this person to do this task because you believe it's a great development opportunity for that person. And if you have done that, then you explain to the person I want you to come up with a plan on how to deliver the outcome you described and tell me what you need to be able to get there. And then this person comes back with the details they think they will be doing. You can ask them questions based on that, but you're not making decisions. You just enable them to do this. And then they run, they run and do the task. They run and decide.

And because you are empowering them, um, You do not jump in. You let them do mistakes, if they're not completely out of the norm. And they will deliver the task as they think it's best for the company and to reach the goal. Huge difference between a manager who is detailed managing the other person and is not really empowering the other person.

Be a leader and empower and you will see the game changes that come out of that.
