Don’t Lose Yourself Ever

Welcome to another episode of The Daily Hint with Jens Heitland. In today’s episode, we dive deep into the importance of maintaining your cultural identity, no matter where life takes you.

It doesn’t matter which cultural context you come from; never lose your culture. This means holding on to the cultural values and traditions you were raised with, whether they stem from your country or your family. I’m German and grew up in a small town. These experiences have shaped who I am, and I carry these values with me wherever I go in the world. They’ve been with me for 43 years and continue to guide my decisions and actions.

In an organizational context, you may encounter situations where the organizational values or the values of your direct reports or managers differ from your own. It’s crucial to understand and respect these differences. However, it’s equally important to stay true to yourself and the values that resonate most with you. If you decide to change, it should be a conscious decision aligned with your principles, not a forced adaptation to fit in.

Understanding and appreciating cultural differences is essential, but authenticity should never be compromised. Being true to your values allows you to navigate various cultural landscapes while maintaining your integrity. This authenticity can lead to stronger relationships and more genuine interactions in both personal and professional settings.

Join us in this episode as we explore how to balance cultural adaptation with staying true to your roots, and why this balance is vital for personal and professional growth. Tune in to The Daily Hint and embrace the power of your cultural identity in shaping your leadership journey.

Transcript:

It doesn't matter which cultural context you come from, never lose your culture. And what I mean with that is the culture you come from, like the country and the family culture you come from, never lose that.

I'm German, I'm grown up in a small town, and I will never lose that wherever I am in this world. And the values I have developed over the last, in my case, 43 years, are sticking with me. If you're in an organizational context, sometimes you will face that the organizational values and or cultures and the values and or cultures with your direct reports or as well your managers are different.

And it is okay and very important to understand other cultural differences, but you should be truly yourself and you stick to the values that fit best to you. If you decide to change, you can, obviously.
