Build Your Career Map to Grow

In today’s episode of The Daily Hint with Jens Heitland, we delve into a powerful yet often overlooked tool for career success—career mapping. Have you ever considered the importance of mapping out your organization’s structure and identifying the positions you’d like to target in the future? This strategic approach can be a game-changer for your professional growth.

By creating a personalized career map, you gain clarity on your long-term goals and identify multiple roles that align with your aspirations. It’s not just about where you want to be in one position; it’s about having a roadmap that highlights five to ten different roles you’re interested in. Understanding how others before you reach those positions provides insight into what it takes to get there. This blueprint gives you a competitive edge because people often promote individuals who exhibit similar traits and actions as those they previously worked with.

The key takeaway? Career mapping isn’t just about having a destination in mind—it’s about knowing the pathways that will lead you there. When you outline the steps others have taken to achieve success, you can tailor your own approach to align with what works, helping you build relationships and increase your chances of promotion.

Listen in to this episode and learn how career mapping can be the tool you need to chart your course toward success in any organization.

Transcript:

Have you ever mapped your organization and what different positions you could be taking in the future? When I work with people one one-on-one, we always look into what is your career map. So we are mapping, of course, their perspective on themselves, but we as well look into the organization. And we look into what it would take for you to get to this position.

And then we have five to 10 different positions that people are interested in. And then if you know this, you can map out the details of how did other people get into this position? And if you understand this, you have almost a blueprint for getting to that position because people like to work with people that are similar.

So if you are doing similar things to the other people did before, they are more likely to get closer to you and get into your friendly zone. So they're going to promote you. Mapping out the organization is the simplest thing everyone can do to understand what are opportunities you want to achieve.
