Being Yourself at Work Matters

In this episode of The Daily Hint with Jens Heitland, we delve into the importance of authenticity in the workplace. The conversation starts with a personal anecdote, highlighting a common scenario where individuals feel the need to change their behavior when at work. This episode explores the question: Why do we often play roles in a professional setting rather than being our true selves?

One key takeaway from this discussion is the significance of finding and creating a work environment where authenticity is not just accepted but encouraged. Jens emphasizes that leaders have a crucial role in curating such environments. It’s essential for leaders to build a culture that aligns with the company’s values and ensures that employees feel comfortable being themselves.

Moreover, the episode touches on the long-term implications of a poor cultural fit. When employees do not align with the company culture, they tend to stay only until they find a better opportunity, leading to higher turnover rates and a lack of engagement.

In conclusion, being yourself at work is not just beneficial for individual well-being but is also critical for the overall health of the organization. Leaders must strive to create an inclusive culture that celebrates individuality and ensures a strong match between company values and employee personalities.

Tune in to gain insights on fostering authenticity and building a thriving workplace culture.

We are fairly often not ourselves in all circumstances.  I was just talking to a friend the other day and we were discussing like, are you changing yourself when you're at work or are you the same person?

And what the person was saying to me is, Yes, I'm a different person when I'm at work. Why? Why do we play roles when we are getting into a company setting? We should be finding a company where we can be ourselves. And we as leaders need to curate an environment where people can be themselves.

That also means we need to find people that fit into the culture of the company. If we are not building a match between company values and company culture and the employees we are seeking,  then we're going to have a problem in the future because if there's no fit, people are just staying around as long as they can't find another job.
