My 7-Hour Trek: From The Hague to Katwijk and Back

Hey everyone! If you’re into long walks and epic adventures, you’re in the right place. Today, I want to share the story of my latest training walk as I gear up for the big 24-hour walk in Amsterdam on June 22nd. So, grab a cup of coffee and join me on my seven-hour journey from The Hague to Katwijk and back through the stunning dunes.

Want to help me reach my donation goal?

It’s 3:12 AM on a Saturday, and I’m up and ready to go with a hot cup of coffee. Breakfast is out of the question this early, so I’m heading out into the pitch-black night. My goal? Be back by 11 AM so my wife can get to work. The world is silent and still as I start my walk, with my action cam capturing the serene early morning.

An hour in, and it’s still pretty dark. I’ve got my headlamp on, lighting the way through unlit paths. I’m keeping a steady pace of over five kilometers per hour, aiming to cover around 36-37 kilometers by the end. The promise of pancakes when I get back is a sweet motivator.

Two hours in, and I’ve made it to Wassenaar. The sky is starting to lighten, and the cold morning air is becoming more bearable. It’s around 6 AM, and the improving visibility is a welcome change. The world is waking up, and I’m enjoying the peaceful early hours.

Watch the video documentary of the 7h walk:

Three hours into my walk, the sun is up, and I’m making good progress towards Katwijk. I’m taking my time, snapping photos and videos, and soaking in the beautiful morning. By 7 AM, I reach Katwijk, take a quick look at the beach, and head back into the dunes for the return journey. The stunning scenery keeps me going despite the growing fatigue.

As I navigate the dunes, I take a moment to think about Justdiggit, the cause I’m walking for. This amazing organization is all about regreening parts of Africa by building ecosystems and training farmers. They’re doing incredible work, and the 24-hour walk aims to raise funds to support their mission. I’m proud to be part of it.

Five hours down, two more to go. The walk is starting to take its toll. My feet are wet from swampy areas, but I push on, motivated by the thought of pancakes and the bigger goal of the 24-hour walk. Proper hydration and electrolytes are making a big difference.

After seven hours and 36 kilometers, I’m exhausted but exhilarated. I’ve learned a lot about fueling and hydration. Solid foods like sandwiches and bananas didn’t quite work, so I’ll try energy bars next time. Stretching and recovery are key, especially for my hip flexors, which are feeling the strain.

Today’s walk was a powerful reminder of the importance of determination and preparation. Each step brings me closer to being ready for the 24-hour walk in Amsterdam. Thanks for following my journey and supporting Just Dig It. Every donation makes a difference, and together, we can help regreen Africa and cool down the planet.
